About Wicked The Musical
Wicked is a musical that is set in the fictional world of Oz that was created by L. Frank Baum in his 1900 novel, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. His book has inspired many films, most famously The Wizard of Oz in 1939, starring Judy Garland. It also inspired a 1995 novel by Gregory Maguire called Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, on which the stage show Wicked is based. The full title of the musical is Wicked: The Untold Story of the Witches of Oz.
The music and lyrics to Wicked were written by Stephen Schwartz and the book was written by Winnie Holzman. The rights to Gregory Maguire’s novel had been sold to Universal Studios who planned to turn it into a live action movie, but Stephen Schwartz persuaded them to instead co-produce a stage show. Wicked debuted at the Curran Theatre in San Francisco on May 28th, 2003 and opened on Broadway at the George Gershwin Theater on October 30th, 2003 where it is still running. It first went on tour in North America in March 2005, a tour that lasted until March 2015, making it one of the longest ever Broadway musical tours in the USA.
The show has a full orchestra as well as guitars, harps and keyboards. It is full of show-stopping songs, in particular the first act finale song, Defying Gravity. Wicked received mixed reviews on opening but critical acclaim grew and it was nominated for ten Tony Awards in 2004, winning two. It was named Best Musical of the Decade by Entertainment Weekly.
The Wicked on Broadway Plot
The plot is based on the early lives of two key characters from Baum’s original book: Elphaba, who becomes the Wicked Witch of the West, and Glinda, who becomes the Good Witch of the South. The show opens on a celebration of Elphaba’s death and moves to flashbacks of her past. Born with green skin, she finds it hard to fit in at college until her flair for magic is revealed. After initial mutual dislike, she becomes friends with her room-mate, the beautiful and popular Glinda, and the two are sent together to the Emerald City to help the Wizard of Oz. Elphaba finds that he is a fraud who is mistreating the talking animals in Oz and makes a stand against him, expressed in the song ‘Defying Gravity.’ This leads to her being declared a ‘Wicked Witch.’ Glinda refuses to speak out against the Wizard and is labelled a ‘Good Witch.’ Many of the good things that Elphaba does are misinterpreted as evil by the citizens of Oz who turn against her and hunt her down.
Wicked features many familiar characters, such as the Tin Man, the Scarecrow and the Munchkins, explaining how they came to be. There is also a love triangle in the plot involving a prince called Fyero who becomes engaged to Glinda but is attracted to Elphaba. The two witches are reconciled at the end of the show and sing about their true friendship in the song For Good.
